Albert Shipp was born in 1889 in Swaffham Bulbeck (Newmarket Q2-1889 3B:550), son of Henry William and Elizabeth Mary SHIPP (née JARVIS).

1891 census...Aged 1, he was at the Fen, Swaffham Bulbeck with his father Henry SHIPP [34], farm servant, born Bottisham; his mother Elizabeth [34] born Cambridge; sisters Alice [12] and Sarah [6] both born in Bottisham; brothers Ernest [10], James [8] and Thomas [4] all three born in Bottisham; brother Sidney [4 months] born in Swaffham Bulbeck.

1901 census...Aged 11, he was at Beacon Farm, Swaffham Bulbeck with his parents (father a stock man), brothers Ernest (ploughman), Henry (shepherd) and Thomas ( worker on farm). These were now all recorded as born in Lode. Also there were brother Sidney and 4 new siblings, all born in Dullingham, sisters Rose [6] and twins Edith and Ethel [1] and brother Arthur [4].

1911 census... Aged 21 he was at New England, Swaffham Bulbeck with his parents (father now farm bailiff, brothers Thomas William, Sidney Richard and Arthur ( all farm labourers) and twins Edith May and Ethel Amy. One sibling had died.


He enlisted in Newmarket.
The 11th Suffolks were in a railway cutting facing the chemical works at Rouex on 26th April and that night their support line was heavily bombarded, especially around the HQ area.On the night of 26th.27th they moved into another railway cutting south west of Fampoux.

The battalion had 3 killed on the 26th, by a shell hitting where they were sleeping in a frontline shelter.
